The following is a custom designed writing desk of solid maple. Mortise and tennons, pegs, and dovetails were used to make a nailless desk; the only hardware is in the hinge and the lift damper. The double bead detail on the aprons as well as the top edge of the writing surface is hand carved. The top is unfortunantly experiencing slight seasonal cupping as any of the lifttop desks of the era that I was shooting for do. If I were to do it again I would have joined a strip of wood on either side like breadboards have. I left the top in two pieces to show off the two eyes formed by the wild grain pattern of the maple.
